In order to facilitate the encounter between strangers, Michael Baumgartner has been creating interactive mirror sculptures for some years.
On three days in October 2019 the sculpture GoGo! was placed in the hall of the Hauptbahnhof Wien and Omid Darvish gave a performance by standing in it. The strong voice of the Iranian-Kurdish singer improvised to the hurrying of the rushing people and the soundscape of the train station. Travellers were invited to approach and step on a little platform behind the performer. Standing on it the spectators’s gaze is directed through a sophisticated array of mirrors, scans the moving body and finally looks into the eyes of the performer. This generates a surprising closeness between two persons, who do not know each other yet.

For Independent Space Index 2019 the sculpture travelled from Hauptbahnhof Wien to philomena+ project space. Till 25th of October visitors are welcome to experience the sculpture GoGo! there and to see documentation material of the public art intervention at Hauptbahnhof Wien.

Michael Baumgartner was born in Krems an der Donau in 1963, grew up in the Waldviertel, lives and works in Vienna. He graduated in sculpture with Bruno Gironcoli at the Academy of Fine Arts, after studies of architecture, stage setting and film design.

Born in Tehran in 1989, Omid Darvish began his musical education at the age of ten. He learned the instrument Tanbur with Yahya Ranaei and classical Iranian vocals with Ali Khodaei, in Vienna he took jazz singing lessons with Martina Petz. In 2017 he founded the ensemble Kurdophone, which brings Kurdish melodies and Western influences into a musical unity.

15/11/ – 07/12/2019

part of the ViennaArtWeek

artists: Lisa Großkopf and Shiri Rozenberg

curated by Christine Bruckbauer
venue: philomena+, Heinestraße 40, 1020 Vienna

Lisa Großkopf (AT) and Shiri Rozenberg (IL) transform the project space of philomena+ into a temporary photo studio. According to the artists, photo studios are spaces in which normative structures of our society, in particular in terms of gender, sexuality and body, become visible in a more compact form. In the displays, the highlights of the (heterosexual) family biography are often presented. At the same time, one often encounters stereotypical depictions of femininity and masculinity regarding the subjects shown, poses, facial expressions, image composition, etc. The photographic works of Lisa Großkopf and Shiri Rozenberg are not at first glance different from those of conventional, traditional photo studios, but on closer inspection the viewer may discover uncommon images.
