Vitória Monteiro’s grandmother gave her daughter a homemade poncho, when she left home for work in the big city, to protect her from evil.
In the workshop “A Poncho for Leopoldine” – the Brazilian Empress, who experienced violence herself – the artist produces a poncho together with female participants of the empowerment project based in the Domestic Abuse Intervention Centre in Vienna. Her grandmother’s poncho serves as a template.
The poncho is a coat commonly used in parts of South America, originating with the indigenous peoples there. It is unisex.
